How Stunning?

by D-Cypher

What is Stunning? Stunning is where your opponent is not allowed to play a page or autocounter during that turn, unless of course they have Once too Often or something similar. Firstly most of the time when you stun someone you have an open field, you can go for almost any move of any type without fear of the opponent getting back in control of you. Its not often that people will break out of a stun and there are a few different ways of using the technique

Stun Chains
A stun chain as the name suggests is where you basically nail your opponent with loads of nasty moves and dont give them a chance to do anything about it, not even autocounter! When you look at pages like Thrust Kick and Power slam you'l notice that it has this annoying phrase "If not already stunned, your opponent is stunned until the end of next turn" this means that hitting two Power Slams isnt going to stun your opponeny for two turns so your stun chain stops before it even got started. The best way to deal with that is the Special page called Stunning Blow, this makes the next move you play, as long as its an impact move, stun the opponent and do +4 dmg and it has no nasty "If not already stunned" phrase on it. This is great, it only costs 5 momentum and two strength, but there are a few things to be aware of if you want to make a succsessful stun chain.

Firstly you should try not to start off your stun chain with a stunning blow, its a waste if you end up playing a stunning blow with flat of the foot and then draw a thrust kick you just lost a turn of stunning, so always try to start your chain off with a stunning move. Next, make it count, dont go using a big time power slam and then a stunning blow with an Inverted atomic drop then being left with a pithy body slam to finish it off.You have to be a bit patient, wait until you can totally annihialate the guy with it, remember these stun chains can do stupid amouts of damage if you play them right.Last, massive damage, when you play your stun chain try it with some With Authority or Working stiff to max out that damage and really make them wish they Autocountered that Power Slam.

Stunning into Moves
Say that you are playing a Behind Opponent Tazz deck looking for a Tazzmission finish, you need to get some head damage on them good and quick, what can you do? Well to be honest Dragon Sleeper isnt going to cut the cheese, people will see what your doing and counter you right out. Then theres moves like enzugiri and camel clutch but....thats a one off type, people will always have that counter just lying around unless your very lucky. What you really want to do is nail the muffin with some big time piledrivers and those enzugiris and the way to do it is to stun them. The behind opponent Tazz is a good example so lets take it further,so through the game you've been hitting them with some nice Behind opponent moves, there left on lets say 30 odd HP. They may have say 8 head damage from your dragon sleepers but any good player knows that what you really want is the Tazzmission.

So lets say you DO lock in that Tazzmisison because they have wasted there counters. Thats still 3 turns they get to counter you, plus most likely a few Crowd Supports or some cheesey grab the ropes. What you want is that the finisher is it, game over, no coming back and the way to do that is to stun them. So take say 3 piledrivers and 4 stunning blows. What you dont want to do is use the stunning blow with the move you want to hit, thats plain dumb. You play the stunning blow with the lamest Behind Opponent, or whatever type your deck is, impact move you have. They get stunned because they figre its only a lame move, then BAM out of nowhere you hit that Piledriver or Bronco Buster or Floatover DDT or whatever. Then if your real lucky you got another stunning blow you play that and suddenly you got a stun chain with moves they never saw coming. You hit say two piledrivers thats 18 dmg and 20 head dmg and thats painful. When you get near the end of the game you get the Tazzmission its all over. This works for any deck where theres a page that would really help you to win or a Tm that is really powerful but just doesnt fit the deck, stun into it, its that simple.

Thats basically stunning in a nutshell, its a wicked thing if you can gauge it right. Whenever making a book with some strength momentum never overlook the potential of Stunning Blow, and make sure you make it count.
