Virtues Of The Speed Deck by Dude! One of the most annoying decks to play against, as well as one of the most effective, is the Speed deck. It is very tough to play against because it is a hard deck to prepare for. The point of a speed deck is, as the name would imply, to win the match as quickly as possible. Generally, speed decks are most effective with a Superstar that does not have an Agility limit. Al Snow, Eddie Guerrero, X-Pac, Shane McMahon, Chris Jericho, and Chris Benoit all have unlimited Agility, though I wouldn't suggest using Shane, as his 0 Strength and 2 Strike limits give him very little else to work with. For the purpose of this article, i'll be using X-Pac, as besides his unlimited Agility, he also has unlimited Strike, which is the second-most important momentum in speed decks. First, let's look at the opener. A lot of speed decks will go for a Turn 2 Splash, and try to ditch a crucial momentum from their opponent's deck. That may help you in ranked play, when people don't see it coming, but in tournaments, as soon as people see X-Pac in your tag they'll be packing a Dodge in their opener. There are no defensive moves there, as there are no critical momentums there. There are, however, 3 momentums, as that way if you get a crappy draw with no momentum, you will already have some there. Forearm Smash/Shoulder Block is a good combo, that i haven't seen used by any of my opponents before, and it works like this: You play the Forearm Smash, and if by some chance your opponent has a Duck and ducks it, you can play Shoulder Block since Duck is countered by all Mad Rush moves, which Shoulder Block is. This opener will get at least 2 of your momentums into play 99% of the time, as few decks keep Ducks in the opener, and almost none keep Arm Drag Counter (which counters both Arm Extended and Mad Rush). This deck is designed to pick up a quick win with Leg Extended, Hit or Miss, and High Risk moves. Leg Extended works especially well with X-Pac, as his Superstar Special allows him to draw any Leg Extended move from his playbook at any time. With this deck, you can start out your arsenal with some Hit or Miss moves, such as Drop Kick to the Foor, which you can get into play rather quickly, since it only carries a cost of 5. Once on the outside, Mafia Kicks are always fun, as they are both Impact and Takedown, and therefore, have a 75% chance of doing double damage on the outside. Mafia carries a base damage of 6, which doubled becomes 12, not to mention that it also can do up to +5 damage, so that means 17 damage on one turn! At this point, you can start to have the real fun with this deck. Spinning Heel Kicks are great to have, as they stun your opponent, setting them up for a 2nd Rope Leg Drop or Moonsault. Another advantage of using X-Pac is that his Finishing Move (X-Factor) is Victim Below, and only costs 12 to play, not too high at all. The great thing about it being Victim Below is that it share many counters in common with Leg Extended, which is X-Pac's specialty. Fireman's Carry and Double Leg Takedown counter both move types, so if your first 3 attempts to hit a Spinning Heel Kick or Thrust Kick were countered by Fireman's Carry, don't get discouraged, because they won't have those to use against the X-Factors. The 12 Cost also benefits this style, as once you've gotten up to 9 momentum (which can easily be done in 4 or 5 turns with this type of deck), you can play a Pose, bumping your momentum up to 12, and nail them with the X-Factor. X-Factor also stuns, so if you have any doubts about whether they'll stay down you can nail one more Moonsault or Thrust Kick to make sure they don't kick out, without fear of it getting countered. Speed is a risky style to play with. If you start off strong, the other guy won't stand a chance. However, if the other guy takes the early advantage, it can be hard to come back from. While risky, it is an indisputably effective strategy, and an easy-to-grasp concept for someone just starting out. If you have any questions regarding this deck or article, you can find me on WA!
